Default Tach Wiring

Hi all,

I just purchased a used instrument cluster and seperately an OEM tach off ebay. My cluster was fine except for the temp. gauge was inop which was why I wanted a different cluster (I did try a new temp. compensator, it was no help).I installed my speedometer into the purchased cluster and the tach. All works great except for the tach and that's because I can't find the wiring behind the cluster to hook it up. The ebay seller said all Volvos were pre-wired for the factory tach (yes I know, I shouldn't believe everything someone tells me) but I can't for the life of me find the wire connector for it. It's only a 2 wire hook-up that I'm looking for. Can anyone confirm that all Volvos are pre-wired, and if so where on earth are they? I've searched behind the cluster to no end and can't find them. If the 91 240 DL's were not pre-wired then what wire off the distributor do I need to tap into to make this tach work?

Thanks all,

Dale

i have a 1989 and installed the tach in mine no problem, i was told they were all prewired also. I only had to hook one wire to mine i think it was red/white if i recall. The three connectors on the top go to your optional clock in the two slots to the right of the cluster.

You only had to hook up one wire??? The tach I purchased came with the clock as well so I'm aware of the 3 pin plug on the top of the tach but had no idea that it only required one wire to work. I was looking for a 2 wire connector. I'll look in the morning and see if I can find the wire you're referring to. Thanks a bunch!!!

it's the same wire that powered the clock, the cluster as far as i know is what is already wired to work with a tach

You were right dtupac and I'm grateful for your help. It was just one wire that I had to hook into the back of the tach and presto!!! Works like a champ!! Thanks so much for your guidance on this, I was looking for a 2 wire connector when all the time it was just a single wire looking right at me... Two thumbs up for your help!!

That doesn't sound like much fun... Although I need to do the same thing myself seeing as how I have no history on my 91. This Thursday I'm going to replace all of the bushings in the rear end, then my next project is to replace the timing belt, tensioner and waterpump, of which all come in a kit from a seller on ebay. I may need to hit you up for more tips when that time comes... Good luck with the pulley bolt, I'm sure it's on there tight!! My car is a stick so I'm hoping it makes it a little easier to bust it loose then an automatic would be.

If all else fails use a long bar and put the socket on the screw then the bar on the ground and bump the key to loosen the bolt.
