Default Clunky front end noise 83 245 wagon

Ive got a 1983 245 that has a clunky metal to metal sound when I go over bumps. Sounds like from the driver side suspension. I’m pretty sure the sound came after I replaced front end parts (inner and outer tie rod, ball joint, wheel bearings). I properly greased everything and checked for tightness as well. I’m going to retorque everything again and degrease the ball joints. Someone said it could be gland nut and I finally got around to taking a look and this is what I found-welds on the threads. I’m guessing this could be the culprit? I had an alignment done after front end parts were replaced if that also is helpful information.

Goldenblock here Senior Member!

That would cause your issues as the gland nuts are a fixed point even if welded

Check your control arms and the threads on your ball joints my brother!!

Will do. I changed the ball joints but will check them anyway. We’re on the control arm. Do you suggest checking?

Yes, even the most seasoned mechanic can overlook the many suspension parts.

Use a long pry bar and probe around looking for substantial movement in bushings etc

Finally had some time to take a look and maybe have 3 culprits:

  1. Control arm bushing: looks old and slightly cracked
  2. stablizer links: I couldn’t find specific torque valules in the manuals for this but how much should this be tightened? I feel like the stabilizer bar shouldn’t be angled like this.
  3. sway bar bushing: Driver side seems to have a gap in the bushing.
I also replaced most of the front end components two years ago (bushings, rack/pinion), ball joint, tir rod ends (inner and outer) so it could be something I did wrong.
