Cut springs on a 245?
I just bought a 5-speed, 1989 240 wagon, and bumped into a guy online (not on this forum) who swears by cutting the stock Volvo springs as an alternative to iPd springs. I haven't cut springs in a long, long time, but I am not afraid of doing so. If the spring is linear rate, the rate increases at the same ratio as the reduction in height, and when I have cut springs in the past, on cars where it was a viable option, I have not had any problems.
In other words, I don't subscribe to the notion that any cut spring is a "hack job" or anything like that, but I also believe you have to know what you are doing and get a feel for the resulting height and effective rate.
So, after this long prelude, has anyone cut the springs on their 240 wagon? If so, how may coils and what were your results? It would APPEAR, just by looking at the springs when my car is on a lift, that cutting one coil off would lower the car about an inch or an inch and a half, and cutting two coils off would slam it down like 3 inches. But I am just guessing.
Oh, and post pictures of what your ride height looks like now! Thanks!
