I've never done a '78 but the instrument cluster should pull out fairly easily. It's about a 10-min job removing the cluster on an '86, but first time take your time not to mess up the wiring to the cluster. Mark where everything goes. Then when you have the cluster on the kitchen table it's pretty easy to replace all the instrument lights. Little screw-in sockets.

On a '78 the bulbs aren't in the cluster unfortunately, they're right above it under the little cowl in which the cluster sits, and they shine through little green plastic windows on the top of the cluster. You should have three little bulbs however, if they're all out then it might be an electrical problem. One of those little sticky lights from a drug store might be useful to light your instruments if you can't get it fixed before the next time you have to drive at night.
