Default Dash lights and head lights

I own a 1988 740 turbo volvo that runs great, but the lights are a lil screwy. The head lights work but tue dash lihjts wont, when the dimmer switch is turned the dash lights turn on but the head lights turn off. I know it's the problem with the rehostat, but I don't know how to fix it. If I need to replace it or just rewire it, i cheaked all the fuses and they all work. Any info would be nice.

Thanks

I don't know the answer but A neon light is made out of a gas-filled envelope with electrical connections on both ends. A high-voltage, high-amperage electric current is used to excite (add energy to) the electrons of the gas's atoms (neon, as well as argon and others can be used). The given energy is absorbed by those electrons, which then shift to a higher orbit around the nucleus. The electrons lose the excess energy and "fall" down to their original, lower orbit, emitting a photon of light with a wavelength particular to the gas in question.
