Default Device in the Engine Block?

hi and hello:

I have a question. Engine is B-230F non-turbo, 1992 VOLVO DL-240, 4 DR Sedan. 2.4 LH System. What device is installed in the block directly under the 3rd intake runner from the front of the engine? I have the Blue Bentley Publications book and cannot find any reference to it. It has a connector attached to it with a spring clip. It's a bear to access and remove. It will require removal of the intake assembly. with throttle body.

I don't know what it is and would like to test it. Car was getting 26 mpg, now 22-23 mpg. My plugs are oily and not nice brown. I installed BOSCH plugs and will go back to NGK plugs. Air Mass Meter is 6 years old and has correct ohms per Bently book.

Your thoughts please or answer. I appreciate your help.

Thank you.

Under the intake on the block should be 3 sensors. Engine temp (for gauge), knock sensor and engine temp (for fuel injection)

You're doing this in response to your MPG drop? Could simply be the switch to winter blend gas.

"Even though prices are slightly higher for summer blend fuel—because it contains less butane—the summer blend contains 1.7 percent more energy than the winter blend. As a result, your gas mileage should be a little higher in the summer months to offset some of the added cost you pay at the pump."

Hoonk:

Thx for clarifying. In the blue Bentley Book I found a description for the sensor It's the Coolant Temperature sensor directly under the 3rd intake runner. It's for the ignition.

The sensors under the 2nd runner are vertically arranged. Top sensor Coolant Temperature Sensor is for the dash temperature gauge. Next sensor down is the Knock Sensor. Finally, the Coolant Temperature Sensor under the 3rd runner. It's connected with a spring clip and connects to the EZ-116k Ignition Module and the LH-2.4 Jetronic Control Unit.

I guess I missed the description of these sensors in the Bentley manual. I spent some time and figured this out. I hope its correct and can help other people.

Sorry for being so wordy, just trying to understand.

Have a great day.
