My 86 240 dl wagon does not have the little black box used to show error codes. The car is from Canada if that is a factor. If I can find such a unit at an auto wrecker, are they hard to install? Thank you.

 

It doesn't matter where the car comes from, thediagnostic box was not fitted until 1989.

I don't think you can retro-fit it as the rest of the system will be missing.

 

I wish I still had my photo-shoot of my 244, thenI could be quite certain. As best to my recollection mine had the diagnostic unit. The only thing else fishy with the Volvo was that it had many signs of alterations here and there, but really not sure..back then I was too new to the Volvo intuition.

 

Thank you for your responses. That diagnostic system sure would nice to have though. Maybe the dealer will let me have a peek at the 89 service manual just to get an idea of whats involved, and if it is possible, practical, etc. I do now know my next volvo will be 89 or later. Cheers.
