ECU differences
In another thread, Hoonk brought up something that made me think and to ask this question. We all know that there are different ECU variations by part number, label color, etc.....is there a way to definitively determine which ECU is supposed to go in your vehicle? For example, I had a bad ECU in a vehicle I am working on (it would not turn on the fuel pump, random stalling, etc...) so I replaced it with one that had the same part number on it. When I took the old one out it had a date code of 11/2014 written on it so I am assuming it was a rebuilt unit. The new unit I put in works, but how do I know it is the actual correct ECU variation for the car? Suppose the previous owner simply replaced it with the first 240 ECU they found, or were told by a parts guy that it would work in the car.
So in short, I guess I am asking, is there any way to find out which ECU variation is supposed to be in a vehicle, or what it came from the factory with?
