Electrical / Ignition Problem?
I'm having a strange problem with my 1988 240GL Wagon.
For about three days I was having a recurring issue where while driving my headlights/dashlights and radio would start to dim as if the battery was dying. I could engage the clutch and rev the motor and they would brighten back up again. This would only happen on the highway (not city driving). At first I thought my alternator or battery were going bad so I took them off and they both checked out O.K. I also replaced all of my belts the same day since I was removing the alternator anyway.
Nothing solved the problem. Finally on the third day while driving on the highway it began to sputter and stall along with the lights dimming. I got off the next exit and attempted to drive through the city. It finally backfired and stalled. After pulling over I could restart it and let it idle, but as soon as I touch the throttle it stalls. I have replaced the plug wires and distributor cap but it is still at this point. It will idle all day long but as soon as you give it any amount of gas it stalls.
I'm stumped. Any ideas?
P.S. I'm a noobie here. Great site! Very informative!
