transferring 92 240 to 88 240 power heated mirrors. does it matter which fuse you use? the fuse on the car i pulled them off of was on fuse 5, labelled spare fuse white 8(?) amp, but it doesn't work on my car for some reason. it works when i use fuse 7 which is labelled for interior lights and cruise control (i don't have cruise control), so will this setup be ok?

 

Sounds fine; just make sure the fuse is same amperage. You also might consider labeling the wiring and making a note in your owner's manual. Nothing worse than buying someone's car w/ mystery wiring!

Not off hand but examine the fuse panel where #5 is...does it have a power wire going to it and leaving as well? A multi-tester or test light will answer the question pdq.

fuse 5 from a '92 is rated at 16amps
fuse 5 from a '88 is rated at 8amps
fuse 7 from a 92' is rated at 8amps
fuse 7 from a '88 is rated at 8amps

What you did, hooking up the mirrors from the '92 to '88 in the same fuse place, 5, was a bad move, if it had power. Moving it to fuse 7 is just as bad and should not have worked either. Are you sure it is in place 7 now? Or do you have a 16amp fuse in that place?
8amp is white
16amp is red assuming you are using the ceramic fuses.

 

it's 8 amps (white fuse)...hmm mirrors seemed to work fine and heat too...maybe a bit noisy? is that normal?
so would any free 16 amp fuse work then?

it appears that on a 85, they used Fuse #1, "Cigar Lighter", to run electric mirrors, but it doesn't show those as heated. the heated rear window appears to use fuse 11 (fuse 12, which is also the AC, is used for the control signal to start the rear window timer). I think I'd hook up heated mirrors to the rear window circuit so they work together (thats certainly how they are wired on all the cars I've had heated mirrors on).

 

the only free 16A fuse is main fuel pump relay...i think i should learn how to wire the fuse box

 

so i went back to the jy and did exploratory wire cutting and got some wires. it seems fuse #5 on the 92 245 is spliced in with the wire that goes to the instrument cluster and some other blue wires that lead out thru the firewall and to the battery. can i just splice fuse #5 with the instrument cluster (blue) power wire?

and with fuse #5, is it whatever amp fuse you put in there? for example, is it 16 amp if u put a red fuse in there and a 8amp if you put a white fuse in there?

 

so i wasn't sure how to hook up fuse #5 so instead hooked it up to one of the other 25amp fuses, first the fuel pump then another. it works great, but it seems to be unswitched power...it works without the key in the ignition. is there a problem with this? if so, how do i make it switched power?

 

You could hook it to whatever fuse is for the power windows...on 240's I think it's 11 or 12.
