Default Gear selector smoke/1985 240 DL

Hello all,

I have a 1985 240 Dl automatic transmission. The other day, I started the car and heard something "zap" followed by smoke coming up from the gear selector. It hasn't happened since, but I am wondering why the smoke, and if I should take the car in. Any information appreciated.

Thanks,
Amelia

Amelia, you've discovered the secret switch that turns all old Volvos into race cars! J/K...not too much in that neck ofthe woods critical to the car. Suspects? Neutral safety switch. Allows starting of the vehicle only in park and neutral Also controls the back up lights. So...you might check that out. The only other stuff there is the overdrive wiring but I can't think it would really generate smoke although it could, in theory. Originally, there was an instrument lamp to indicate gear selection at night...but by now, those bulbs are generally burned out and few people replace them. Try starting the car in drive or reverse. If nothing happens, great. Also, when dark, back up against a wall and check to see if you have back up lamps.
