Default gear shift lever and car start

I have a 92 240 with an automatic transmission that is going to be sent off to collage with my daughter.

The sometimes the gear shift lever has to be jiggled back and forth in order for it to be in position to make contact for the car to start.

I would like to repair this before she goes off with the car, any advice.

That sounds like the neutral safety switch, which is under the gear selector cover:

I put a new neutral safety switch in almost 2 years ago…I think this is a problem of the shift lever being “sloppy” ....by that I mean a mechanical problem …like a leakage of some kind needing to be tightened up

Does any of that make sense?

thanks for you help....

Then I would say its the bushings for the shift linkage.

I agree with bubba. I was going to say the same thing when I read the problem. My boss's 760 had a case of the sloppy shifter. You could get under the car (use jack stands or a lift, but not just a jack) and with a small flashlight, you can look at where the bottom of the shifter lever comes out of the floor panel over the trann'y and if the pins that connect the push rods to the lever-end ar sloppy and have no rubber bushings, that's it. Just adjust the push rods after replacing the bushings. My boss never did and his lever never lined up perfectly after that. His back-up light didn't come one in the right position either. You could also eliminate the sensor.
