gearbox swap, compatibility?
I'm looking at probably getting a 940 GLE 2.0 DOHC and I need to swap the original manual gearbox to an automatic.
I have located one from a 740 2.3 redblock and I would like to know if its compatible? Any modifications necessary? Thanks

first, the DOHC engines used a AW72 gearbox with lower gear ratios (higher reduction ratios) because the DOHC engine is a higher revving beast with very little torque at low RPMs. the non-DOHC used AW70 or AW71 (heavy duty version, mostly on turbos).
second, LH 2.4 cars, which are 1989+ (turbos 1990+), require a bell housing with a notch in it for the crank position sensor. LH 2.2 was used up to 1988 (1989 turbo).
in addition to swapping your transmission, you will of course need to swap the shift linkage and console trim around it, add the overdrive solenoid circuit (which is different for an automatic than a manual), remove the clutch mechanisms, and replace the 'flywheel' on the engine with a 'flexplate' ... if your car is LH 2.4, this flexplate has to be from a LH2.4 car as it has notches in it which are read by the crank position sensor.
