Default Getting at the fuel pump.

Hey all. im trying to help out my pops and fix his 1985 dl, ive already done the trouble shooting and found that it needs a new fuel pump. Im trying to get to the fuel pump but it has this funny twist release, I think I just need to go hard at it with a screwdriver but I want to double check cuz I don’t want to find a new gas tank for this thing.

Also, ive read that some Volvos have an internal and external pump, an 85 dl would only have the internal right?

Any help would be great

The '85 gas engine has 2 fuel pumps -- a prepump in the gas tank and a main pump under the car just in front of the left rear wheel.

There is a tool that is used to twist off the bung nut at the top of the fuel tank.

Are you sure the prepump needs to be replaced?

I see the external fuel pump now, my mechanic said that if there was an external it would be mounted on the out side of the tank.
I don’t know for sure that the prepump is bad but there is voltage going to it and the car has ZERO fuel pressure. Is there another way to test it?

If you place a jumper wire on the left sides of fuses 4 and 6, both pumps *should* run constantly, listen for them. Also clean/inspect fuse 4 and the 20A blade fuse by the coil.

+1. Fuel pumps don't go bad very often. Most likely cause is the fuel pump relay or the 25A fuse as mentioned. (I think it's 25A).

how long do those fuel pump relay or the 25A fuse last? I had my fuse/relay replaced 2 years old and I am wondering if I should buy an extra one just for an emergency.

I've seen recommendations of the fuel pump relay being changed about every 10 years. I keep a spare in the glove box, along with a full set of fuses.

The O/D fuse blew once at 5am while driving around town and it was still dark out. Pulled into a 7/11 to change the fuse but couldn't see anything in the fuse block. Pitch black. I was just lucky to have a small flashlight, which I normally didn't carry. It doesn't do much good to have spares if you can't see what you're doing. I guess I could have bought a flashlight at 7/11 if I had to.
