Heater Core

Heater Core
Sup sup? New to this forum. I have volvo questions so what better place to have them answered than here?! So if my heater core is broke/not working what should I be looking for? Water in the cab? Bad smell? If the core is broke will it still produce heat? I picked up an 88 240 for $900 and its a real nice car. It runs well and the body and interior are clean. When I bought the can the guy told me that the heater core was out so he taped up the ducts so it would not fog up the windows and I took him at his word and never even turned the heat on, but today i got nosey and started poking around. I remover the black tape covering the ducts and then took the car for a drive and tried the heat. It seems to work fine so I find that a bit strange but happy about it. I ran the heater for about 5mins and no water leaking that I could see and no funny smells. any suggestions of what I should be looking for? Thanks! Cheers and Beers. Swifty L.

The water still circulates and transfers heat, it just leaks and stinks as the pressure in the cooling system builds. You'll notice the carpet wet on the passenger side.
240 heater core is a pain to change. You could bypass the core by looping the heater hose in the engine compartment, loosening the coolant cap or, if you dare, try a stop leak product.
