Hi - long time reader, first time poster here.

I have a 1988 240GL and we've lost the last of the keys. Volvo don't seem to have kept a register of chassis numbers from before the early 1990's so I'm unable to get the key code from them to have a new key cut.

Does anybody know of a list of pre-1990 model chassis numbers/key codes?

OR, does anybody know if the key code may be marked on any of the actual locks?? ie boot lock or door lock?

The locksmith needs the key code in order to cut a key but this code is proving rather ellusive. Any helps/suggestions appreciated!

a good locksmith should be able to pick a lock, say the glovebox lock, remove the cylinder, and MAKE a key to fit it....

or, pick all the locks, remove the cylinders, and you can get a complete set of locks with new keys from Volvo.

9203267 is the lockset for a 4-door, 9203269 for a 5-door, these are $201 at tascaparts.com, I guess thats kinda pricey, and I bet the locksmiith would need a couple hours to pick all 5-6 locks, doubling that. never mind.

 

Thanks pierce - I was hoping somebody might have an old list of the numbers on microfiche or something. One of the locksmiths here in Brisbane (Australia) did but disposed of it all recently in a move. Oh the timing...

 

afaik, the only place those chassis->key numbers were kept was at the factory in sweden. US dealers have always tried to claim you can't order keys by VIN because they didn't want to go through the trouble.
