Default high mileage!

Hi everybody!

I have a very rusty 82 240DL wagon, it is my first Volvo but has done a very good job of getting me attached to these cars. I am looking to buy another that is a 82 240GL wagon that looks to be very well looked after and in very good original shape. The only problem is that its got a whopping 487,000 kilometers on the original motor!!!! The owner says it runs well and only uses a little bit of oil between changes. What kind of mileage is realistic to get out of these motors if they are properly taken care of? Is it going to go 20kms or 300,000 kms before a rebuild?

Thanks

As long as you keep up with the little maintenance things....It should last a very, very long time.

That is only ~300,000 miles so it is still fine. Mine has ~261,000miles right now, and I am modding it.

Why not move up a couple of years? The late 80s early 90's made great improvements in wiring and reliability are plentiful, affordable and often have under 150K

I have 85 that I picked up and was serviced by a Volvo Specialist and it has 215k on the clock... I normally would be appreensive, but the owner had ever receipt since 85. That's what you want to look for in a vehicle. If it comes with an extensive service background, then you shouldn't have to worry much about it. Rememer, these are 20-25 year old vehicles,so somethings are liable to break, but if it has been maintained with proper care to the factory specs, then not too much to worry! Good Luck in your search...

Thanks guys!

The car I am currently driving had every receipt from when it was new in the glove box from the local Volvo specialist. The only reason I am wanting to get rid of it is due to the cancerous rust that has just eaten the car up. Its getting tougher to find good Volvos for sale here because people tend to keep them instead of putting a for sale sign on them. The one I am looking at getting is a very pretty car, Dark grey in color with the alloy wheels, new billstein shocks and has been lowered.

I had an '83 245 with 378K miles and it was going great when I sold it... but you never know.
As far as "extensive records", in my own experience, the worst cars I have had, both had inches thick files of receipts. May be just a coincidence, may be eager mechanics who encouraged and did work, or not, but produced receipts for gullible owners? I personally don't care a whit about "records" and never even look at them-I just look at the car, its various systems, and listen.
My favorite question, "why are you selling it?" My answer: "well, my mechanic said it is a deathtrap, and I better unload it to the first victim who asks stupid questions.
Or, why the importance of "one owner"? Is one terrible owner better than 3 good ones?

Yes, I do have 8 cars... but this is constantly changing. Just got rid of the Audi Avant, it was 9 with it in the picture, and I do have another '96 328IC but it is for sale so I don't really count it. Oh, and the wife has a '01 Passat 1.8t which I take care of but it is not technically mine... but who's counting.
