High Pressure Fuel Pump Noise
Hey all, my high pressure fuel pump tends to make a lot of noise when it reaches about half a tank and has been doing this since I replaced the sending unit in the fuel tank. My suspicion is that the in tank pump has is dead and makes the high pressure pump work harder. With the old sending unit in it seemed to not make any noise, but I could not get a correct reading of what I had in my tank. Anything else that could be the issue?
I would say your assessment is correct. I could always tell on our 240 when the in-tank pump failed due to the extra noise the main pump made. When you replaced your sending unit, did you replace it with a new or used model?
I don't know what kind of mileage you had on the old pump but it sounds like the one on the replacement sending unit is not working. Its always good to bench test a used component prior to installation. Before you tear it apart, make sure all connections are good and they have power. If that all checks out, then you will have to pull it out again and replace the pump. How many miles is on the old pump? Is it worth it to put it back in only to find out it fails again in 6 months? New pumps aren't overly expensive although the turbo pre-pumps do run a bit more.
Good luck.
Good luck.
The miles on the original one was about 80k miles on it. I have taken the sending unit out so many times that I can replace an entire sending unit in my car within an hour. If I had the money I would just buy a new, complete sending unit. But the cheapest way for me to go at this moment is just for me to swap out the pumps and hope for the best.
