I am interested in replacing the horn switches on my 1992 Volvo 940 Sedan. This model has a small horn button on each side of the airbag. I recently purchased a new switch assembly on Ebay.
It is important to note that the horns are currently functional, but the horn switches do not reliably connect the horn circuit. I can play with the buttons by pushing on them, in various places to enable the horn.
Can someone provide me instructions on how I can replace the switches? I am able to remove the switch covers to reveal the copper switch pad, but I need help removing the individual switches and the switch harness. The switch assembly I purchased seems to be complete in that the wires exist between the switches and there are two different contacts that somehow attach to the steering column.
Some help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

 

I believe you have to take off the Air Bag to get to the plugs. Not that hard... Disconnect the battery and wait 20 mins. Use a Torx 20 (I think) long shaft to unscrew the two bolts in the back of the bag. Remove the bag and change the horns plugs.

 

Lev, Thanks for providing me some guidance on this one. Especially the battery disconnect prior to disturbing the Air Bag. The Torx head is actually a Torx 30, and yes you need a driver that gives you approximately 2 3/8" reach. Although I had a new switch assembly complete with wiring harness and the proper ground connector and positive contact, I opted for simply using the existing wiring harness and simply installing the new horn switches via the blade contacts. Using the new harness would have forced me into removing the steering wheel to install the new spring loaded positive contact. My problem was with the old switch pads and the horn buttons now work like new!

Behind the front bumper, driver's side. Just look up, don't even need a jack...

i have a '92 740 that i need to clean the horn button contacts.

the horn buttons have a 'slip contact' which contacts a ring. thats what usually fails.

when you take off the airbag it should all be self evident with a bit of common sense

I forget if you have to take the steering wheel off or not. if so, unlock the ignition lock, and use a padded 2x4 stuck through the spokes of the wheel and wedged against the floor/console to stop the wheel from turning, while you use a big socket and breaker bar to get the nut off. you can probably find pictures and videos of doign this.
