Default How can I get wheels from a V50 to work on my 940

I've been looking for a way to inexpensively upgrade not only my wheels, but my tire size from 15"s to 17"'s on my '93 940 wagon and found a set of barely used tires with some good looking wheels that came off a V50 for only $250.00. However, even though the bolt pattern is the same, they don't want to go on. The only thing I can see that's different is that it seems that these newer wheels have a circular raised portion in the center that could be keeping them from settling down onto the drum completely, though I'm not sure if that's the problem so I'm reaching out to see if anyone else knows how I can get these wheels to fit, if at all. Do I maybe need an adapter and if so, which one and what thickness should it be. Thanks for the help in advance - Scott

The center bore on V50 wheels is 63.4mm, hub size on a 94 is 65.1mm - So you could machine the center bore out on the v50 wheels to fit over the 65.1 mm 940 hubs - The offset on v50 wheels is 20-25mm - on 940 wheels it's 46-52mm - Your new wheels depending on the width may sit 25-30 mm - closer to the center of the car. Sure you could use wheels spacers to compensate for that but you would need to put in longer wheels studs on all 4 hubs to use a spacer that thick. Or with spacers that thick perhaps someone makes a spacer to fit a 65.1mm hub with a 63.4 center bore wheel.

Thanks so much for that info, it's very helpful. Looks like now I need to determine which way to go.

I would find suitable wheels with the right offset. I used Volvo "Hydra" wheels on my 740, they are 16" x 6.5" and suit the car nicely. I think the tire size was 205/55R16 ? a /50 series tire on a 17" rim doesn't have much sidewall, and with the Volvo's live axle suspension will result in a pretty harsh ride.

Thanks, but I don't care about the ride as much as I care about the stance and, in fact, plan to lower the car as well.

slight lowering with sport springs, beefier sway bars, and Bilstein HD shocks is one thing, but slamming a RWD Volvo to the ground with the resultant negative camber and 'stanced' wheels is just plain stupid and useless. you instantly devalue the car.

Thanks! But I guess your idea of a "stanced" car is different from mine, i.e., I never said I was going to "slam" the car to the ground. I simply said I was going to lower it for a better overall stance, which means that I'll simply be going with IPD Sport Springs which'll lower it about 32mm in the front and a little less than that in the rear. So....relax!

ok, when people say 'stance', I envision something with the suspension nearly totally compressed, stupidly wide rims with no-sidewall tires stretched onto them, sticking way out past the fender wells and the car so low to the ground that a parking lot driveway requires slowing to a full stop and creeping over or you scrape hard parts.

p.s. I intentionally left my 740 at stock ride height, even adding heavy duty wagon rear springs, because I found myself on dirt roads fairly frequently while carrying a lot of gear. I used bilstein 'touring' shocks because I value ride comfort on long road trips. I put IPD's softer sway bars on it for better cornering, along with the 16" Hydra wheels.
