My 1986 240DL wagon seems to get poor mileage. (Unfortunately my odometer and trip meter don't work so I am just going by intuition.) How many mpg should I expect to get?

Turned out to be the Overdrive, also the engine seals also needed replacing and the engine generally tuned up.

I had the same problem with my '86 240 DL wagon until I had the odometer fixed. That should probably be step 1. Otherwise, how do you know what the MPG is? After that, I replaced plug wires, distributor rotor & cap, fuel filter, normal tune up. Runs like a top now. But it's barely broken in with only 115k mi. Est 21-23 MPG but I haven't checked carefully.

 

Thank you. My guess is that I am getting around 20-25 mpg.(with about 130k on clock). I have changed plugs, wires, cap and rotor but am definitely in need of tining check, so maybe things are OK and will improve once that is done...odometer may have to wait, as I am not he most technically or mechanically apt person

O/D works fine (that was the first of many minor problems I had when I bought the car)
