I have an 1989 245 (non turbo), I notice the timing belt has 85,000 miles on it. How many miles do you go between changes?

Check the manual but I think that you are due.

 

Can't get to my AllData right now but I'm fairly sure that the square tooth geared motors like yours have a service interval of 50k. Regardless, you are definitely due. It's customary to closely examine the belt tensioner (I always replace mine out of laziness) the crank, cam and intermediate shaft seals. They often will seep without be visible when timing cover is installed.

 

The service interval for the later models is 50K so it is well overdue. It won't hurt your engine if it breaks while you are driving but it will leave you stranded.

I agree with Swift on this one - I always replace the tensioner and the seals if I don't know the history on the car. Also, it would be good to check out the water pump while it is apart. Make sure that bearings aren't worn or loose.
