Allright, I was trying to change the transmission filter on my 89 740 gl wagon, but ran into a problem in one of two places. but thats not the point of this post.

I know I have an AW series tansmission, but how do I tell if I have an AW70 or an AW71?

 

There should be a plate on the side of the box with the maker's name(Aisin-Warner) and the type of box.

However, the '89 740GL was fitted with the AW70. The '89 740 Turbo was fitted with the AW71 which is a heavier duty version of the AW70.

 

well, mine definetly is nota turbo. so, Unless someone upgraded the tranny, it must be the AW70.
