Idling 240 very loud and shakes

when was the ignition system last R&R'd (new plugs, rotor, distributor cap, and if needed, spark plug wires?)
does the engine hold a steady idle once warmed up? with your foot on the brake, if you shift from P or N to D or R, do the RPMs stay fairly constant after a brief dip, or does it lug and stumble when stopped in gear ?
idle problems can be caused by the throttle position idle switch not being properly adjusted, a gummed up throttle body not fully closing, a gummed up idle air control valve, or random vacuum leaks. see https://www.volvoclub.org.uk/faq/Eng...#Idle_Problems for a variety of tests and such.
also, it might be the engine mounts (and the transmission mount, which is in effect the third engine mount). these are 25+ year old cars, those mounts are rubber and rot with age and oil spills.
