Default Ignition/ shift lock problem

I have a 93 240 wagon with ignition/ shift lock installed. I normally can override this function by pressing the brake pedal and the car will start. Today, I'm stuck because the ignition lock will not release when the brake is applied. The car will not start.
Can anybody tell me what the problem may be?
The steering wheel is not locked.

there is a black box which is screwed to the side of the shifter with a lever that has a pin which goes into the shifter itself. This lever moves with the shifter and slides in the black box there. When the car is in park or neutral then the car will start. I have found that the lever comes unattached from the shifter and does not move with the shifter, thus indicating that the car is not in park or neutral when it actually is. You can either unplug the 2 plugs which go to this box and jump them, in which case the car will start in any gear or you can replace this item. I think it is like $100 from the dealer or so

good luck
