My 90 240 won't start with the key... Doesn't click, nor does the starter turn. Hot from the battery to the starter motor works. I have a new coil, and just recently replaced the ignition fuse and housing (inside the engine compartment.) Any suggestions where to look next?

 

Do you have power to the trigger wire at the starter?
The small wire.

 

Not sure yet... I borrowed a test light. Does the key need to be in the start position for power to be there?

 

Yes it does power is supplied to the small wire at the starter and that is what makes the starter turn on.

 

Still haven't checked yet, but I am assuming there won't be power there since the car starter with the solenoid hooked to the battery. Where is the other end of that wire? There is an awful lot of yellow/blue wire under that hood!!!

 

The small wire to the soleniod on the starter goes back to the ignition switch.
Thats why I was saying to have someone hold the switch in the start position and have the test light on the wire and if it lights then the starter is bad.

 

So it turns out to be an intermittent starter problem. Now the next proble is removing the old starter. Do I need to lower the transmission to get to the upper bolt? There's about 1/4 inch of clearance between the trans and the sheet metal there. I can't turn the bolt with a wrench (actually, two wrenches hooked together) and can't get a breaker bar with a socket on the bolt. Any suggestions?

 

I can do mine with an offset spanner ( box end wrench) turned around backwards ,and used from inside the engine compartment. I break it loose with the fixed wrench ,and then work it out with a offset ratcheting box end. You can also do it from underneath the car with a socket ( 18 or 19mm) then a swivel knuckle ( or a swivel socket) and about 2 1/2 feet worth of extensions angled down and to the back of the tranny.
