I have a 1988 Volvo 240, need to replace inner tie rods. The end is circular and smooth at the rack connection, don't know what Cam brand rack side looks like yet. My question is what tools to use to remove inner tie rod, without damaging rack?

You can use a pipe wrench to remove it.

 

going through it right now, do you need to hold on to the rack when removing the tie rod?
