Default S80 inner tie rod end replacement.

I need info on how to remove the inner tie rod ends. Have the outer one off already. There is only one flat on the rack which the tie rod end threads into, and the hex on the end is too narrow for a standard open end wrench. Not much room to get a wrench in there either. I'm all ears!

Turn the wheel all the way so you can get as much towards the outside as possible.

The I use a Pipe Wrench to break it loose.
Same to tighten.

Do you use the pipe wrench to hold the rack while breaking loose the end or do you use the pipe wrench to break the rod end loose? I'm concerned about damaging the rack.

Ok, thanks. I'll give it a shot Monday. Just wondering, doesn't that risk damage to the rack?

I have never had one damage the rack in the 7 years I have been doing them.

The special tool is only a really long socket. Same affect with trying to loosen it.

The pipe wrench worked great! One more thing. I found some oil in the bootwhen doing the passenger side. Guess the seal must be leaking. Is this a bench job or can it be done on the vehicle? (This car is a 2001 with only 90,000 miles. My wife loves the car but I'm surprised at so manyparts wearing out so soon!)

You usually can't get the seal.
You usually have to replace the rack.

I just got vadis, but all the fixes involved taking out a bunch of things.

I will be doing this inner rod replacement soon. Is there anything more I should know other than taking out the outer rod anduse the pipe wrench to break it loose?

I'll be doing this at home with stands and jack.

It should be pretty easy.
when you remove the outer one count the number of turns for it to come off.
This way you can install it pretty close to where it was.
Then have an alignment done.

I was able to get a pipe wrech on my inner tie rod to remove (both sides) as the tool I had didn't work because of those yellow nylon spacers... can anybody tell me what those are for???? I will take a pic if necessary...they sit directly behind the inner tie rod on the (steering rack) shaft

Tech,

Thanks for the idea on turning the wheel, I had already thought about trying the pipe wrench in the morning to remove, but would have been sceptical of using it on the new one. Good to know it should work ok, I"ll let you know how it goes

Be careful with pipe wrenches slipping. Always try to use the right tool for the right job.
Cheers

If you are out of options, I would try an additive such as a TransX to see if it will soften/swell the seal enough to help it seal.

I have never used it to solve a leak on rack and pinion steering but it did help with the older recirculating ball type steering boxes.

TransX has chemicals which rejuvinate the seals. If you use an additive, stick with a brand name. You may want to try your local NAPA dealer.
