Hey guys, first post here.

So my dad and I have picked up a nice 1989 Volvo 240 and I love it (our family has a long history of 240s but none since I've been able to drive). However, I do NOT love the fact that I can only choose between listening to cassettes and the radio. So my alternative was to keep the factory radio (for when dad wants the radio and cassettes) in the bottom tray and install an aftermarket stereo in the top so I can have an auxiliary input to listen to my mobile phone.

Is this possible? If it is, how would I go about doing it? I have no experience with car audio at all.

Hmm, dual radios... I like it as a challenge and would love to give it a go but I'm guessing you're not in or willing to travel to Minneapolis for me to have some fun.

You have a few other options:
Go to Target/Walmart/interwebs shopping site and get a cassette adapter. Looks like a cassette tape and has a wire with a headphone jack. Plug it into your phone and play your jams.

Install aftermarket radio with a phone port and USB port and update dad on his tech.

Find the wiring diagrams online, splice the wires and DIY.

Take it to a shop and pay them to have it done.

And of course, come to Minneapolis, buy the parts and play me in beer and good company...

I think the bigger issue would be how to hook up the speakers. Also making space for the new head location. I would think you would need a few relays that would switch speakers from one unit to the other which can be done but may have to be switched manually depending on which unit you are playing. The easiest option would be to replace the radio but I don't believe you can get one that plays tapes. I guess you need to make a decision.

 

Just get a cassette to AUX.
