Instument pannel lights

Default Instument pannel lights

After changing a warning lite bulb in my 91 740 wagon, all the instrument panel lites no longer work. This includes the ashtray/etc lites. The fuse is OK. Rechecked all connections on the back of the instrument panel. The panel lites are controled by a slider switch on the dash board but i find documentiaon referring to a box on the back of the instrument panel circuit board as the "lighting rheostat. THe slider switch tests OK with a VOM. I don't really care about dimming the lights - is there any good way to bypass the rheostat on the circuit board? Is this really the problem...?
