Default Looking for mechanic

I have an 86 240DL BF230 Engine. Recently had changed the water pump (leaking) and belts to include timing. Car ran for a little bit (couple of miles) then back fired and sputtered to a stop. It tries to start but the immediately shuts off and the engine all but tries to jump out of the car. Local mechanics stumped as they have no training on old foreign cars. Previous mechanics that were well versed all retired. Any directions would be helpful.

Check the timing belt. It may have slipped a tooth or two.

Pretty good bet the timing belt is the culprit. Any slightly competent basic mechanic should be able to get you going. Or if you were the meister, redo the belt, make sure you do it right!
