What year? sounds like you have a fuel mixture problem or weak spark. Have you replaced plugs/wires/rotor/cap etc anytime in the past 5 years? How do the intake air boots and vacuum lines look? Any other symptoms?

small air leaks in the intake air path can behave like that. I had that problem on a 1990 mercedes, was the rubber seals around the injectors where they go into the intake manifold. you can use an unlit propane blow-torch to 'flood' the area with propane, if you hear the idle change, odds are there'sa leak. start around the injectors, then around the throttle body, and around the plastic pipe that connects the thorttle body to the MAF (mass air flow meter, also called an AMM)

the MAF is on the output of the air filter box., inline with the large diameter air tube that goes to the throttle body.
