Default my 745T w/ hydras

well, sunny beaches. I bought this 92 745T a couple weeks ago and have been figuring I needed to do all kinda suspension work, but I knew it had crappy tires and at least two rims were bent (hey, it was cheap!)

so, I scored a straight set of 16" Hydra's locally from a friend of a forum member... got new tires on them today and mounted them and all the sudden, the suspension isn't nealy as bad off as I was afraid. sure, needs shocks,a nd rear overload springs, and a few key bushings, but in general is gut'nuff!

but, dayum, Hydra's look good on a silver 745T!

more importantly, the Hydra are 16x6.5 instead of 15x6. they take 205/55-16 instead of 195/60-15 tires. afaik these are the only 16x6.5 rims volvo made for the RWD cars (FWD have different offsets)

Man, you guys had ugly turbo front ends! (but nice Hydras).
Aus delivered, one year only (1990) turbo front end:

Even the indicators were different to standard 740's that year.
Hydras were standard on our 89/90 740 turbos.

Regards, Andrew.

the foglamps were used on 760's, and 940SE/960's. I don't think the 2-tone turn signals were ever used in the US. the egg-crate grills on select turbo models ended some time before 1990 afaik.

my 92 740 is very much a base model relative to most US models, has manual seats, no cruise control, although it does have a power sunroof and of course, the turbo.

interesting, never seen the 'volvo' logo on the front fender up there. on our US models, its on a black rectangle down where your side indicator light is.

hydras were common on 740T's up to 91 in the US. in 92, the last year for the 740, they came with the Aries rim, which were also used on a bunch of 940 versions (the 940's were introduced in 1991 in the US, so there were two years of overlap)

Meh...the 90 740 in the US was a one off year as well. Hood, grill and headlight trim unique to the year. It makes replacement parts quite difficult. Converting to the more common 91+ hood is what I'll do this spring.

That's the Euro front end, I guess it was everywhere but in the US, nice one piece glass headlight lenses! The Hydras were standard on all 1990 740 Turbos in the US, optional afterward... I'd think the Volvo fender badge is a "custom" job?

Nope, my car cosmetically is as it was delivered. The Turbo here was top of the line in the 740's, you had to buy a 760 to go higher, and even then it may have had the turbo four. Although you couldn't buy a 760 wagon, so the Turbo was it in wagons.

here, IIRC, prior to the release of the 940, the "740 Turbo" was generally the sporty model, while the GLE was the more upscale model, although there were also GLE Turbos (confusing, eh?). Then, of course, above that was the 760, either V6 or Turdblo.

When the 940 was released in 91, they held onto the 740 for 2 more years as a stripped down base model, but it did come with the turbo or not.

As soon as the 940 appeared here, the 740 was discontinued. The 940 didn't do well here, our economy tanked just before it's release......a 740 Turbo was a near $60k car here due to our dollar.
