my busted **** 1979 244dl
Hello everyone! I am definatley new to this forum so please dont ream me, lol. Id like to say in advance that your help is much appreciated. I was wondering if anyone could help me find out what a problem is that i am having, or at least isolate it to smaller portions. When i turn my car on for the first, lets say "second" it idles great. than all hell breaks loose and the idol drops and my car shuts off. Start it again, it shuts off again. The third time it still idles like absolute crap. After it warms up it idles a bit higher it seems but its still rough (not as rough though) (By the way during this process if i push my foot on the accelerator it actually bogs down the enigne and then when i let up off the accelerator the revs go up, i really dont get it) I put it in drive and start going and for like 5 seconds its really slow, then it feels like a get a sudden burst of power and it starts running right. So thats the "starting problem". Now when im acceleratiing the motor seems to sputter quite frequently and it causes the car to buck, i dont believe its backfire....i think it may be fuel delivery but i dont know how to test that. So ive narrowed it down to Fuel Delivery, Spark, or Timing...... You see my issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated. (Other than telling me i need to buy a new car ) Thanks a bunch.

You are very perceptive, yes it's undoubtably one of the three things you mention. [:-]
What kind of fuel delivery is your car running...K-Jetronic?
First lets assume the basic tuneup stuff has been done: plugs, wires dizzy cap & rotor, intitial timing setup.
I'd start with a thoro cleaning of the throttle body and intake butterfly.
Then look for intake system leaks. Spray carb cleaner at all the seams, if the idle changes, that's a leak. If it is K-Jet, don't forget to spray around the injectors...the o-rings can fail causing problems.
Get back to us.
