My car won't turn over?
Firstly I'm sure there are plenty of threads about this but I got tired of looking for one that applied to my car model.
So its a 1990 740 sedan it won't turnover when I try starting it.
Its got gas the starter is working so the battery's good got lights/windows etc. by that I mean it tries to start jus' never turns over.
My brother in-law says he bets it something with either the fuel filter or fuel pump.
I never really noticed any symptoms leading up to this except for its always taken 3-5 seconds to start when turning the key.
And not sure if this would have anything to do w/my predicament but it started doing this only after I experienced a heavy downpour of rain. IDK prob not lol
I don't know the milage on it, I was stoked it said only 129k on it when I bought it then a couple months later I noticed it never budged from 129 lol so it might be time for a fuel filter replacement. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Cars are cars, most start the same way and the same problems stop them from starting.
Turning over and cranking is the same thing. That means that the starter is working and turning the motor over when you try to start it. If it is turning over but doesn't start, that means it is not running/firing.

OK if anyone happens to see this I think I'm on to something. I believe the issue is electrical. It has had some hiccups before with the electronics. So I've been following the directions in my Chilton book and the part I'm stuck at now is the book is telling me I need to take an ohmeter to the ECU and check a couple terminals only problem is I can't for the life of me figure where this Electrical control unit is .The book gives me a pretty lame picture of what it looks like. I can't spot it on the car or find anything more specific in the book. If anybody know what they're talking about and where to find it that would be really great.
the ECU on a LH2.x 240/740/940 is in the passenger (right side) foot well, just forward of the passenger door lower hinge. you remove the kick panel under the dash, then the plastic panel on the right/outer side of the footwell and voila.
the ICU location varies with the car. on LH2.4 740/940 its also behind the glovebox, in the passenger footwell. on LH2.2 740's, its on the drivers side. on older LH2.2 240's like 87's, its on the right fender, just behind the headlight.

Wait, is the engine turning over or not? I'm still confused. Is the starter turning the crank, but the engine is not lighting (no combustion). The first thing I would look at is the tach while cranking. If it doesn't at least jump a bit I would go straight to the flywheel pickup for crank angle.
As always for a no start, check for spark, wet plugs (meaning fuel) and open the oil cap and look in to check and see if the camshaft is rotating while cranking.
If the starter is not moving the crank but its' spinning, it's probably the overrunning clutch or the plastic ring gear in the starter, which would mean getting a new starter. Unless you are crazy like me:https://volvoforums.com/forum/volvo-...run-car-59961/
