I'm brand new to this site and also the world of Volvo.
I got this car today off someone in town for a few hundred and a cigarette.
Just wanted to introduce myself and post a picture of it.

Let me guess, it's either an '83, '84, or '85..... '84GL?

 

It's actually an 83 GL

Yeah it has been running like tank. The only issue i've had with it is it wouldn't start. I had to get a jump. I took it to an auto parts store. The guy came out with a volt meter. He put it on without the car running and told me yeah the battery is bad. However, he didn't test it with it running. So couldn't it be the alternator?

 

if he just tested it with a voltmeter, he didn't do an honest test... you really need to LOAD test the battery, and on some cars, a bad battery will cause a alternator to show bad even when it's good....

more than likely you had a bad battery, and if you haven't had a battery light come on while the car is running(especially at night with lights on) then the alternator is actually in good shape...
