Hi All,
I’ve recently picked up a 1989 760 turbo intercooler with very low km, horrendous body tho.
looking to swap them engine into my 1990 740 gl N/A. Both cars are automatic.
Any advice I can get would be great as far as compatibility, will the tranny need to be swapped, will the wire harness and wires hook up, do I need to swap the computer etc. As similar as the engines look there are so many more wires and hoses on the turbo one clearly.
have any of you guys done this or a similar swap?
Thank you!

your 1990 GL is either Bosch LH 2.4, or Regina, while the 89 Turbo is LH 2.2, so yea, you'll need to swap everything, ICU, ECU, coil, harness. Turbos have a ballast resistor on the high flow injectors, tis is on the left fender behind the headlight.
the turbos have a stronger transmission, AW71, which is otherwise identical to the AW70 in a non-turbo, so it would be a good idea to swap the transmission too.

Pierce thank you for the feedback. I’ve got the engine out, tranny and pumps. Just havnt touched anything under the dash, wire harness etc yet.. sounds like a big undertaking but I’m into it now! Thanks again for the feedback, anything specific you would look to replace while doing the swap? Rad hose etc?

probably a good idea to replace all hoses, specially the oft neglected heater hoses. If the heater valve looks crusty, I'd replace that, too.
you shouldn't need to replace the /whole dashboard harness, just the injection and ignition harnesses.... LH 2.4 has the ECU and ICU both behind the dashboard, I think LH 2.2 is simialr (my 2.2 car was a 240 which has a different ignition system). The LH ECU's are on the right side of the passenger footwell, just forward of the passenger door lower hinge. I think the EZK ICU is either behind the glovebox or on the instrument panel side, mounted on the firewall
I don't have 740 wiring diagrams except for the 1991/1992 models which are virtually 940's.
