Question 1990, 240DL Engine swap

Ive got an old 240 sitting in my back yard with almost 300 thousand miles on it. I would love to swap the engine with something that is practical and has maybe a bit more horsepower than what I'm working with now. From what Ive read you can put just about anything in there, but I'm wondering what would be the best and most affordable option? Chevy small block? Does it need a V8? Any and all information and ideas will be accepted and thanked!

Also any information about the need to swap a transmission or anything else if this happens!

check out the jagsthatrun.com website. They sell kits (ie motor mounts etc) and documentation for V8 swaps into Volvos. Post pics when you get that LS installed.

I personally had the idea of a small Japanese N/A V6 (small Mazada maybe?) or a modern 4 cylinder swap if possible, but never seen anyone did that. Sine mine still pulling strong I never seriously considered that idea, but I feel it might be a good DD swap option.

most all of those japanese engines are setup as FWD/transverse engines, so adapting them to RWD/longitudinal mounting will be a bit of a challenge.

maybe a toyota truck motor? but those aren't particularly high performance.... A 22R-E 2.4L (1985-1995 Toyota Pickup, 4Runner, etc) is 113HP and 140 ft-lbs, that is nearly identical to the B230F, maybe a bit more torque.
