Hi all,

I don't have the 130 + tax the mechanic wants to change my transmission filter and fluid on my 1993 240. Can any of you give me a step by step on how to do it. I know that it's alot, but if I can do it, it would be great. Thanks.

 

Kinda tough to say without knowing what kind of a tranny you have. I'm guessing you have an automatic.

I would not touch the tranny pan nor anything near the tranny. I do it at the upper cooling line on the radiator. Use two opposing wrenches on that line. A 1" open end on the nut against the radiator. And a 15mm (I think, maybe 14mm) flair nut wrench on the fitting.

it is an automatic transmission.

whenever we checked the fluid the other day, it smelled burnt and had lost its viscosity.

 

I would change the fluid. I did it recently on mine with a 12-case of Dexron III. On the final quart, use just half, saving 1/2 qt for later. Then drive around and check the fluid level while the engine is at idle. It's a lot easier to add fluid than it is to remove fluid.

Is another site with a step by step flush procedure. The one drawback to just flushing is that it does not clean the screen. I would do them together.

change the fluid clean the screen nuff said...flushing dislodges particulate matter from the sreen and other parts where they may collect.

 

When you drop the pan and change teh filter, you'll get maybe three litres out of the transmission of about 8 litres.
Get a pan gasket too, if you ask at a spare parts shop for a "filter change kit" you will get teh filter and pan gasket.
So I suggest you go ahead and change the filter and refill with oil, then go for ashort drive, open the drain screw on teh trans (or remove dipstick tube if you don't have a drain plug) and drain again.
That'll give you a good amount of fluid change. I generally drain my auto transmissions yearly.

I would definitely replace the filter I have seen them fail.
