Need help diagnosing strange no start on 82' 240 Chrysler ignition.
So I have an 82' 240, B21F, with the American Chrysler ignition. I have gone through a million hoops and its still having start issues.
To begin, it had this weird start issue where the engine would only run when the key is in the final stage meaning the starter is cranking. The second the start disengages, the engine no longer runs (after trying to start a few times, it would then not even start up when cranking). I first checked spark and fuel (all good). For a few weeks, after the advice of someone on a forum, they suggested that I could get it to start by jumping a wire from the positive terminal on the battery to the coil. This worked for about a week until it stopped working. Next I replaced the ignition switch, and this seemed to work for about another week or 2 until also failing. This time the engine shut off when driving, and would not start with my little jump trick (also the engine was no longer starting at all when cranking). This eventually forced me to take it to a mechanic, where after a thousand dollar bill and an engine wiring harness replacement, it finally worked.
Well that was until tonight, where once again we were back to the same old issue. Engine only starts up when cranking. Luckily I still had my little jumper wire, and after a few failed attempts, and another shut down while driving, I managed to get it back to my driveway.
So what in gods name is going on here. I'm terrible with diagnosing wacky electrical and wiring issues, and although It could be an error on the end of my mechanic, I really don't wanna take it back and rack up another big bill, I just don't have the money for it right now.
Before resorting to the mechanic, does anyone have any idea as to what we could be missing here that I might be able to fix myself for cheap. could it be the coil, or maybe something with the Chrysler ignition box in the engine bay? I'm just really not too sure.
