I have a 1987 240 wagon and I'm new to the forum...
My heater fan is fried. I had it checked out and the cost was quoted at almost 600 beans. I checked the procedure to replace it and it seems doable but time consuming and maybe a bit frustrating. Does anyone have any experience replacing a heater fan on a '87 240 with AC (that doesn't work)...

well, I am a certified Volvo tech. and yes...its a pain...the easyiest way to do it is pull out everything you can in the dash...i know it sounds random but it will help in the end...you can deff. do it your self BUT its gonna take time...if you have the money i would get somone at a volvo shop since it will take less time and you wont have to keep track of all the crap you pull off. hope that helps...its just a matter of time and lots of labor.

I did this exact same job about a year ago on my 89 240 wagon. I can't see dropping 600$ on an 800$ car. (ok maybe 1000) The fan turned, but after about a minute made a loud BUZZZZZ. Shot bearings I guess.New fan 38$ Changing itwas a pain, no doubt. But I did it and you can too. It seemed like I had the whole inside of my car in the hatchback and thought I'd NEVER be able to get it all back in- but I did. Line up an alternative way to get to work for about a week if you are going to tackle it evenings. It is quite involved. I wrapped all of the ducting pieces with aluminum duct tape to seal the leaks. Go for it- you'll get it! ps- my AC doesnt work either! Dave

 

Thanks for the replies! I know that I can handle the work. The link will be extremely helpful if I decide to do it myself. Usually my limiting factor is tools but in this case I have no excuse. Also I ride my bike to work, so having it in my garage for a week wouldn't be a big deal. I know how this stuff goes though and usually I curse myself for not paying someone to do the work once I'm into it. I'm going to think about it until it gets too cold...

Franz- You know I always figure if I REALLY screw something up I can always take it (or tow it) to a shop and have it all straightened out. I may have done that a few times in the 25 years working on my old cars / motorcycles / tractors / snowblowers. There really aren't any special tools needed, just lots of Band-Aids for your hands! Does your bike have an engine? mine does. The snow will be here (here) before you know it- I'd get to it. Dave

 

My bike has no engine but my legs! You make a good point though. Maybe if I get the dash pulled out and the blower replaced I can pay someone to put it back together for me and it won't cost me 600 bucks!!

 

I don't know of any places that will re-assemble somthing. They usually want to do everything or nothing.
