Default New guy to Volvos

I just aquired a 1990 240DL sedan. The car does not start. I was told the car would run and drive fine. But after a while the car would just shut off. Now, the car does not start at all. The guy I received the car from said he changed all the sensors, fuel pump and ecm.

I have not looked at the car yet. I am a chevy guy and really do not know that much about Volvos.

I am going to check the basics like fuel and spark this weekend.

Just checking to see if anyone else has had this problem.

Thanks for the help

Check those 3 things and let us know.
Make sure the flywheel speed sensor was replaced.

A friend gave it to me.

It is a solid car, no rust. Nice interior no rips.

Just some mechanical issues.

Go to www.stepbystepvolvo.com for free guide to 740 no-starts (B230 engine). Tech may be right; it could be the rpm sensor.

I checked out my car today and got it running. The intake tube between the aircleaner and the mass air flow sensor had a big hole in it. Fixed it with some electrical tape. New one was ordered.

Now the idle is off. Sometimes the idle seems to be right, other times it seams high.

Could it be the Idle motor?

I would fix the hose first before worrying about the idle.

I had a 740 GLE that use to get that hole in the duct. The tape never sealed it good enough. Wait till you get that replaced and go from there.
