our 87 240 had front door small speakers only, nothing in the rear.

that said, no, it won't be plug and play, first, the space the stereo is in is a non standard size/height. a single DIN deck can be fit in there using a mount adapter.

second, there's no real standard on car stereo wiring, you'll need to get a volvo 240 specific adapter that the factory harness plugs into, then wire that adapter to the harness that came with the aftermarket stereo.

this is a harness adapter for a Ford F250 being wired to the harness that came with a Pioneer DEH-X6900BT...

and completed, wrapped in some spiral loom I had handy...

*NOW* its 'plug and play'

the blue wire I didn't connect would go to the power antenna if you had one (the F250 didn't)

ok yea my car only has the 2 front speakers. Radios come with one of those harness things then I would have to buy a volvo one to connect it to right. Like this or is this something diffrent Metra 70-1120 Radio Wiring Harness for Volvo 82-97 Amp Bypass Harn https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002BEQA2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_YAxpBbCKCH19J
thanks also my radio that was in there already had one of those adapter plates on it but it has holes for ***** but was just going to cut it

that amp bypass harness is probably for a 740/940, as they typically came with an amplifier under the dash, above the driver's left foot, which you'd want to bypass.

this is the mounting adapter (it comes with 3, you use just the top one)
Metra Part # 99-9222 | Volvo Dash kit | Metra Online

and I believe this is the wiring harness adapter for a 2-speaker 240...
Amazon Amazon

re the mounting adapter, on our 240, hah, I took some 'plumbers tape' (thats a sheet metal strap that has holes down the whole length of it), and secured it to the support screw hole on the back of the stereo, bent about 2" sharply at a right angle so it was flush with the top of the stereo and bent the rest of it so it was level with the bottom of the opening, I stuck a piece of foam rubber I had lying around, and a small piece of wood between the stereo and that lower bend, and wedged this whole thing in the opening, such that the stereo was held firmly at the top of the opening. this worked just fine for 3 stereos over a 30 year period, hahahaah. since its so far down the dash, the ugly factor didn't really matter much.

btw, we did put rear speakers on our 240, some JL Audio (*)6.5" component speakers with external crossovers, cut holes in the rear 'parcel shelf' of the sedan for the speakers, mounted the crossovers on the forward wall of the trunk near each speaker, and ran speaker wire from the stereo down to those speakers. they seriously overpowered the 4" door speakers, so I upgraded those with the best 2-ways I could find, and installed 100Hz 'bass blocker' capacitors in series with the door speakers so we could crank up the bass to the 6.5's without blowing out the 4", it sounded pretty darn good.

(*) actually, the JL Audio replaced a set of JBL 6.5 coax speakers that we'd installed back in 88, they finally died after 20+ years, and the JL Audio components were an upgrade.

that harness doesn't connect to the rear speakers since the original car wiring doesn't have any rear speaker wiring.

so, you would need to connect the stereo' harness rear speaker wires (violet, violet/black, green, green/black) to some new wires you run to the back of the car...

suggestion, the /best/ place to run rear deck speaker wires is just to the right of the center hump... to do this, you remove the back seat lower part, and the passenger front seat, and the passenger side door sills, and lift the carpet, and push the wires all the way under the carpet so they are right up against the center hump...... if thats too much for you, then just remove the passenger side door sills and "B" pillar lower trim, and run the rear speaker wires along the door sills. the center hump is better, because there's less electrical interference from other wiring that might cause buzz in your speakers.

now, if you have a wagon, its harder.... there is no rear deck to mount speakers in, so either its a speaker enclosure that floatts around in your cargo space, or you have to dink about with rear door speakers, which kinda suck since the 240 doors don't have much room for big speakers.

You want plug and play? Have the original radio sent away and rebuilt. I have done this on an old E30 and on one of my 240s. I just prefer the look of the original radio and not being a huge audiophile, don't need anything other than FM.

Pierce that is a nicely done pigtail.

of course, that will never support things like hands free cellphone use via bluetooth, something virtually all newer car stereos have built in.

of course, for the hands free, you'll need to take the supplied microphone, mount it somewhere like near the mirror or the top of the A pillar, route the wire down the A pillar, behind the dash, and plug it into the back of the stereo...

I put Hella MicroDE projector fogs, with yellowstar H3 bulbs, on my 740 turbo wagon.

it was already wired for them, so I just had to replace the rear-fog-only dashboard switch with the front/rear fog switch from a 940 with the factory fogs, and extend the wires to my under-the-bumper mounting...

(that 2nd picture was prior to me recessing the back more into the fender skirt so they sat more level...)

yeah, only 240's with factory fogs were the really old single-round headlight versions, with the GT grill. late 70s, very early 80s.

still, they aren't hard to wire. you can get those Hella MicroDE projector fogs with a complete wiring kit that includes a harness, switch, and relay. the relay is normally wired so the fogs can only come on when the lowbeams are on.
