Hey gents, bought myself a Volvo 740 yesterday (200$). Original idea was to use it as a derby car…however it's power everything, and seems like it just needs a very limited number of items fixed to be road worthy. Keep in mind though, budget is very limited.

So my question is: Derby or Road?

I will attach a few pics, from what I can see it needs:

Fuel line(s)
Windshield
Muffler/Piping
Air intake pipe
Power Steering lines
Battery

Red block Volvo's are the best ever. I put over 400,000 on the one I had. The motors are made to last a million miles.

I met a couple of guys last week that makes those red block's crazy fast. They actually install turbo's off of city buses and do some other mods to them that enables them to be dd and the fastest things on the road.

Where are you located? If you need some help, let me know and I'll hook you guys up. Maybe they can do a little for you and you can do the rest.

Okay, just kidding. I would find one in a lot worse shape to derby. The only real reason to give up on a Volvo of this vintage is massive cancerous body rust or if someone stole your motor. They are some much easier to work on compared to transverse engines and are of that era where they have simple but complete electronic engine management, but not all that government regulated crap. I'm with RSPI, you could get this and keep it forever and haul dressers and if modded haul them faster.

I'd love to eventually have a turbo…definitely not used to having so much space in the engine bay.

Haha. Yeah I get what you're saying. That's what struck me with this one - the rust on it is very minimal for a '90 car.
What's RSPI?
Ontario emissions rules have changed, will have to look into it…would this model have a Cat?

Do you guys have a good source for parts to get me started with my repairs? Keep in mind I'm a complete Volvo noob right now, but I'll come around.

Not sure how you will deal with shipping prices??? Maybe order everything at once or take a trip to USA and pick them up. Ouch!!! I just shipped a part to Canada and the shipping was more than the part.

Yeah shipping to Canada sucks. That's why 2 years ago I started shipping to a business that's just barely in the state of New York (Ogdensburg).
They charge a small fee for receiving and storing your parcel(s), and I pay 13% on its value at the border, but I'm still way ahead of the game than if I was shipping internationally to my home.
