New to Volvos - Aux cooling fan question

I just picked up my first volvo (940 turbo) and so far it's been a real pleasure to work on. Everything is well thought out, well laid out, and really intuitive. So far i've replaced the blower motor, the valve cover gasket, a couple cooling hoses, bulbs, etc...
The problem that I`m having is that when I bought it, the auxillary cooling fan was completely removed, and I`m not sure how everything lines up to get it back into place.
Here's what I've got: In front of the radiator theres a metal hoop with 3 holes. In the trunk there's a plastic shell/mesh that bolts into the hoop. The fan/motor bolts into the plastic shell/mesh with three studs.
The problem is that I don't know which way is forward for the plastic piece, or which way the fan is meant to face. If I install it the way that's intuitive to me, theres nothing stopping me from sticking my fingers into moving blades.. and that doesnt seem right to me.
Anybody know how this is meant to go back together?
