I have what appears to be a very similar problem in my wife's 1992 Volvo 240 wagon, but much of this thread seems to assume that I have a wiring diagram & know where various things are physically located.

Where can I find wiring diagrams for this year & model? All I can find online are for much earlier years. I probably need help in where to search for this. Also, which other years at least have wiring close to 1992's?

When we got this car 3 years ago, the instrument lights all worked, but none by the climate controls. Now the only dash lights that work are indicator lights, such as high beam & turn signals. I have checked all of the fuses.

I hope it's just possible that we merely have burnt out bulbs. If so, how do I get to them to remove & test & probably replace them? My assumption is that cars usually don't last long enough for dash lights to burn out, so manufacturers don't bother to make it easy to get to them. I will try the instrument cluster light tips posted by act1292 in Jan.2006, but what about the rest of the dash?

Finally, what type of bulbs are needed? I've heard that Volvo dash lights are unusual, i.e., not common bulbs. The Autozone website says #2721 bulbs ("Instrument Panel Light Minibulb") "fits your vehicle", but #24, #24N, #89, #562, #904, #921, #1891, #2040, #3218, #7440, & #230003 are also listed as interior lights but "not vehicle specific". Can anyone verify that #2721 is the one I need? Is one bulb type sufficient for everywhere in the dash? If no one has the answers, I guess I'll just find out when I pull things apart.

Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

VCOA (Volvo Club of America) sells a CDrom with most all the Volvo 'green books' for a given series, like the 200's. this includes the wiring diagrams for every year, along with books on stuff like brakes, steering, suspension, transmissions, fuel injection, etc etc. the catch-22 with these manuals is they are in a PDF-like forum thats *heavily* copy protected so they can't be 'shared'

all 240 dashboard wiring from 1989 forward are pretty close to identical....

to replace the lights in the instrument cluster, you pull it out. the bulbs in the other dashboard things like climate control require disassembling various parts of teh dashboard to access. odds are at least 50-50, your problem is the rheostat/dimmer, although the console lights (a/c controls etc) might be bulbs or a wiring problem.
