Default No moon roof 1985 Volvo 740

I was going a little too fast when I closed my moon roof when it became square with the opening it ripped off and was run over by an 18 wheeler. Anyone know how hard that is to replace. I’m thinking about find a new one and welding it in.

It's easy to replace but seeing how it got torn off it depends on the damage that was caused by the event. You'll have to post some pictures.

I honestly don’t know where to start I been looking at the Volvo parts catalog website or whatever and it looks like some pieces might have gotten torn off

I would go to my local Volvo junkyard first - to find as much used as possible - i don't see the sunroof cables and "shoes" in your pictures. The cables must be in the open position - put them in the closed position and you should be able to see whats broken where the cables are (should be) attached to the sunroof. Those shoes are what pulls, pushes and flips the rear up on the sunroof. The should appear in the notches in the black track near the rear of the opening. I suspect you will have to replace the cables, and all the little parts that are missing - there's a bunch. It's a simple fix if you have done them before - if not it can be very confusing getting everything aligned. Do you do all of your own repair work?

Making this thing right won't be easy! The reason it got torn off is because it was not installed correctly in the first place, looks like the panel was just taped to cover the opening, not bolted. It'd take a lot of work and/or cash to fix it. The best and easiest way to restore it is to acquire a whole new roof assembly, pan and all, from a wrecking yard. The good news is that it's not expensive and it's a part that is hardly ever damaged so no high demand. Also, all 740, 940, 960 use the same roof so it's not rare by any means. You'd have to drop the headliner, a pain if it's a sedan, not so bad in a wagon, replace everything. If you are not up for the this adventure, just get another panel and secure it in place with the proper screws, there are eight in total. But then you'd probably still have to tape it up (ugly) as it probably leaked due to plugged drainage holes in the pan. Hopefully you are handy and have a yard near you to source parts whichever route you choose because a shop won't cheap. Keeps us posted!
