Is it a 240? If it is, there's a few reasons that happens. The one i'm familiar with is the fuel/air mixture. If it's running rich it'll put up a fight to stay running in the begining and progresivly get better the warmer the engine.

Well....i'm less familiar with the 740's but it still could be the problem. My sister had a 740 turbo with the same problem. I told her take it to a dealer and have them clear the computer. It worked fine after that.

Do you know how to pull codes on the car?
If not follow link to learn how. Just because the light isn't on at the moment it might have codes.

After checking all of the the common things that I was posted to check out , I was not able to fix this problem,

However just before I decideed to give up and replace the engine, I happen to remember, when I bought my boat I ran the engine onland without a load, and it ran fine, when I put the boat in the water and tried to go anywhere at some kind of speed till, the boat had no power, Hummmm!! checked everything, changed the distributor and , that fix the problem .

So I said to my self , self check the distributor on the Volvo, and I did and found the little black connector for the sensor was broken so i replaced the sensor with a new one so i tested the engine and it ran fine. so I tested the engine and a trail of smoke came out of the exhaust
But after the engine warmed up the smoke dissappered

I now have power, but it smokes like a steam engine for a while then stop smoking after it is warm, I wonder if this could be a valve problem. If so, can I use the head from the 240dl, ( THE HEAD IS IN PERFECT CONDITION ), by removing the rear seal and putting the distributor there from the 740 GLE engine.

You would also have to use the 740 Cam. Also look at the Valve and make sure the turbo ones aren't bigger.
Have you done a compression test to make sure the compression is good?

It could also be a turbo going bad.

What color is the smoke?

No I havn't done the compression check yet, I haven't pulled the heads yet . I had several people tell me that the valve maybe bad, and a valve job cost a lot of money. The smoke smell like gas, and about the same color as the smoke in your picture.

Black= Running rich
White= means bruning coolant
Blue means burning oil

I would do a compression test.
Then if something seams low Squirt some oil in the cylinder and retest. That will rule out rings.
