Default Noob questions about bolt patterns

So I'm new to cars and I have some questions. I have an 89 240 dl wagon and as I understand the bolt patter for the rims is 5x108. What does that mean? I take it the 5 means 5 lug but what is the 108?
I want to improve my cars "stance" by spacing out the wheels a bit, I was looking at rims with lower offset but seems to me 5x108 isn't a common size? then I was looking at these wheel adapter things, what the deal with these, how do they work?
Also Ive seen adds for wheels that say "universal 5 lug pattern" does that mean it will fit any 5 lug car? what the difference between a universal 5 lug pattern and say 5x108?
Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you.

Yes, 5x108 is not as common, but there is still some rims you can get.
5 is the number of lugs, and 108 is the diameter from center to center of the lugs.
They also sell spacers that allow you to use other bolt patterns. example: 5x108 > 5x114
There are a few companies that make some nice spacers, and most of them are expensive.

I was looking at these: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Set-4...#ht_1609wt_939
whats your opinion on them? I was looking at the wheel selection for 5x4.5 it looks much better.
thanks

I personally would go with a brand I have used, like H&R.
I have no comment on the linked product.

Maybe other can give you their opinions.
