I have a 1979 242 3 speed automatic.
I'm attempting to replace the blower motor, and since I have to pull apart a big section of the dash I decided to try to fix the broken odometer. But I cant seem to be able to remove the instrument cluster without removing the dashboard. And to do so, it seems that I have to remove the steering column? This is becoming to big of a job for me.
I searched online, but most videos and tutorials are for 80's cars that have a different cluster.
Thank you, and help would be much appreciated!
Your 1976-1993 240 instrument cluster comes out after removing 4 screw and unplugging it.
You end up removing the instrument cluster (and the glove box) to deal with the defrost/floor vents that have to come out during blower motor replacement. Steering column is not moved. This site shows a cluster being removed. Good luck!
Hi Hoonk, thanks for your reply.
Unfortunately my dashboard is an earlier version of the one you posted a link for.
The one in my car is different, it wraps around the cluster. I haven't been able to find any screws to take it off. this is a link to a picture of it (not my car)
Sorry it's like the 1978 I had. Remove the top of the steering column cover (#25) to expose 2 screws at the bottom of the cluster. And that's a great looking interior for a 44 year old car! Find and install a tachometer in the middle of the instrument cluster for fun.
Hi Hoonk, I did as you said and still it will not come out. The instrument cluster seems to be attached to the dash even after I removed the two screws as you recommend above.
I'm at a loss here
